Una schiuma bianca invade la scena, facendo apparire solo in parte le figure umane. Qualcosa si muove al di fuori e all’interno dell’inquadratura, svelando ben presto, in modo surreale, un evento che ci connette con una dimensione rituale. Studio astratto sulla tradizione arcaica della lotta dei tori nel sud della Francia, Tourneur pone i corpi al centro del linguaggio cinematografico, pur rivelando solo stralci della danza fra i tori e l’uomo, forzando l’azione al di là dei limiti del visibile. Rovesciando lo sguardo etnografico e impedendo allo spettatore una visione d’insieme, il cortometraggio di Yalda Afsah è un’investigazione poetica sulla realtà che dà luogo a una presenza senza mostrarla. Lo sguardo della regista consente di entrare nel cuore del rito da una prospettiva partecipativa, dove lo spettatore, grazie anche all’uso profondamente espressivo del sonoro, è invitato a riempire l’intervallo latente tra il visibile e il non visibile.

White foam flows into the scene, where the human figures only partially appear. Something moves outside and inside the frame, quickly revealing, in a surreal way, an event that connects us with a ritual dimension. Abstract study on the archaic tradition of the bull fight in the south of France, Tourneur puts bodies at the center of the cinematographic language, while revealing only excerpts of the dance between the bulls and the man and forcing the action beyond the limits of the visible. Reversing the ethnographic look and preventing the spectator from having an overall view, Yalda Afsah’s short film is a poetic essay on reality that creates a presence without showing it. The gaze of the filmmaker allows to enter the heart of the ritual from a participatory perspective, where the viewer, thanks also to an intensely expressive use of sound, is invited to fill the latent space between the visible and the non-visible.

Yalda Afsah è nata a Berlino nel 1983. Cresciuta nella capitale tedesca, ha studiato all’Universität Der Künste Berlin, alla Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule di Halle e al California Institute of the Arts. Nel 2018 consegue la borsa di studio Karl Schidt-Rottluff e partecipa al Berlin Program for Artists. Vive e lavora a Berlino. Il suo ultimo cortometraggio, Tourneur, è stato presentato in anteprima mondiale all’ultima edizione del Festival di Locarno. 

Yalda Afsah was born in Berlin in 1983. She grew up in the German capital and studied at the Universität Der Künste Berlin, the Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule in Halle and the California Institute of the Arts. In 2018 she received the Karl Schidt-Rottluff scholarship and took part in the Berlin Program for Artists. She lives and works in Berlin. Her latest short film, Tourneur, premiered at the last edition of the Locarno Festival.
