Il regista fa ritorno nel suo Paese d'origine, una Siria sconvolta dal conflitto armato, assumendo l'identità di un video-reporter filo-jihadista per raccontare da vicino il radicalismo islamico. Trascorre più di due anni insieme a Abu Osama, un generale legato al gruppo armato salafita al-Nusra, per elaborare un ritratto unico e inedito sul processo di radicalizzazione terrorista, in particolar modo sulla relazione tra padre e figli, basata su una stretta educazione mirata alla guerra santa. Of Fathers and Sons pone una sfida dolorosa, laddove il contesto di violenza mostrato dal cineasta (dal cui patto stabilito col capofamiglia protagonista dipende, oltre che il destino del film, anche la sua stessa vita) diviene scenario di un superamento nell’approccio documentario: quando una videocamera filma al di là delle “linee nemiche”, il cinema oltrepassa una barriera del visibile. Che cosa rimane dopo lo shock?

The director returns to Syria, his homeland now destroyed by armed conflict. He takes on the identity as a pro-jihadist video-reporter in order to closely investigate on Islamic radicalism. He spends more than two years with Abu Osama, a general linked to the Salafi al-Nusra armed group, outlining a unique and unprecedented portrait of the terrorist radicalization process and the relationship between father and children based on a strict education aimed at Holy war. Of Fathers and Sons confronts us with a painful challenge. The context of violence shown by the filmmaker (whose life, and not only the film, depends on the pact established with the protagonist), becomes a scenario where the documentary approach is overcome. If the camera reaches out beyond the "enemy lines", cinema crosses the frontiers of what is visible. What remains after the shock?

Il suo documentario Return to Homs ha vinto il Gran Premio della Giuria al Sundance Film Festival. Of Fathers and Sons è stato presentato a IDFA in anteprima mondiale.
